Langtang and Helambu
An ideal introductory trek for those planning their first trek to Nepal!

Langtang and Helambu treks

The Langtang area caters for all abilities and trekking styles, both tea-house and camping treks are equally as rewarding. This is an ideal introductory area for those who are planning their first trek in Nepal.

The Langtang National Park is almost due north of Kathmandu and butts up against the Tibetan border. Created in 1976 and with an area of 1710 km² it is Nepal’s second largest National Park after the Shey-Phoksumdo Park in Dolpo.

The Langtang National Park contains a wide range of flora, fauna and bird life, boasting around 1000 plant species, 160 birds and 30 species of mammal, including the Himalayan tahr, musk deer and the lesser panda.

BHAIRAV KUND TREK (10 days, max altitude 4,010m)

One of our newest routes, designed for trekkers who seek a challenge but within a relatively tight timescale, or for people who want to mix trekking with other adventure activities.

This is a trek of contrasts, taking us from the communities and culture of Tamang villages to the unpopulated and less frequently visited holy lake of Bhairav Kund. The descent from the lake at 4000m is through rhododendron and oak forests to the scenic villages of Tanisthan and Duguna before a well earned rest at one of the resorts close to the Tibetan border and a visit to the CAN supported school for deaf children at Bahrabise.

HELAMBU SKYLINE TREK (12 days, max altitude 3,771m)

The great attractions of this trek are the people in the villages through which we pass and the opportunity to take in a number of Community Action Nepal projects. This is an immensely rewarding trek for walkers of good fitness and average ability.

LANGTANG and GOSAINKUNDA (19 days, max altitude 4,773m)

This trek captures the essence of the landscapes and character of Nepal. Contouring along the northern side of the lower Langtang Valley, in view of the surrounding peaks, we trek among the villages and farmlands of its people, many of whom are of Tibetan origin.

Once an important trading route with Tibet, this influence is reflected in the character of the villages and peoples. Gradually gaining height, we emerge above the tree line into a broad glaciated valley, dominated by the awesome face of Langtang Lirung. Here, in the valley’s ice-scoured upper reaches, we have three days set aside to explore a jumble of peaks, glaciers and moraines.

After a week trekking in the valley, with two days set aside for exploring its upper reaches, we head for Gosainkund, an important pilgrimage site, whose sparkling lakes are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

To reach the lakes we must climb, but with the reward of arguably one of the finest Himalayan panoramas, from the Ganesh Himal west to the Annapurnas. Crossing the 4600m Laurebina Pass to descend to Tharepati, a magnificent view of the peaks ranged to the east unfolds. The trek ends with a classic descent along a ridge route through the farmlands and villages of the Helambu region.

This short trek captures the essence of the landscapes and character of Nepal. Contouring along the northern side of the lower Langtang Valley, in view of the surrounding peaks, we trek among the villages and farmlands of its people, many of whom are of Tibetan origin.

LANGTANG, GANJA LA and YALA PEAK (16 days, max altitude 5,500m)

This adventurous trek combines the beautiful scenery of the Langtang Valley with the chance to climb 5503m Yala Peak. The ascents of Yala and nearby Tsergo Ri are within the capability of those who have fully acclimatised and have basic winter skills experience.

Although classed as a trekking peak, this is one of the easier peaks which falls into that category. From their summits the incredible scenery of the upper valley can be viewed in its entirety.

TAMANG HERITAGE and LANGTANG VALLEY (16 days, max altitude 4,773m)

This recently opened trail combines spectacular Himalayan views, historical and cultural heritage with an insight into Tamang and Tibetan cultures, including Tamang rituals, religious festivals, traditional architecture and the exotic costumes of the Syabru dances.

Starting from Shyabru Besi in Langtang, the route passes through the small communities of Goljung, Gatlang, Chilime, Tatopani, Rasuwagadhi and Briddim before finishing back at Shyabru Besi. From Goljung Pass there are magnificent views into Langtang and Kyirong in Tibet.

At Tatopani we can bathe in the hot healing spring waters before reaching Nagthali Hill. Briddim is a Tibetan village dominated by Tibetan culture where we can stay in ‘home-stay’ style accommodation, eating traditional food and sleeping in a family home.
